Career History July 2009 – January 2010 Torrey Pines Capital Management – Senior Analyst, San Diego, CA Managed a team of 3 analysts evaluating companies worldwide and their competitive environment. I produced high-quality fundamental analysis and derivative strategies for a $400+mln global large cap equity portfolio. As lead analyst, my role was to take broad economic views and distill them down to executable transactions for a > billion dollar private portfolio. The role involved understanding the investment objectives of the principal, identify investment opportunities, create and implement actionable transactions. Successfully undertook shareholder activism, engaged management and stakeholders to execute improved strategies at portfolio companies. Heavy use of derivative transactions to match risks with objectives. Primary responsibility for derivative structuring/analysis/execution. Large emphasis on equity, credit and commodity options, swaps and futures using a variety of valuation techniques and models.
August 07 – January 08 Sempra Commodities – Senior Analyst, San Diego, California Primary role to structure and analyze electric energy contracts as well as physical commodity contracts. This is a very data-intensive field, relying heavily on effective development and use of proprietary quantitative analytical tools. This role involves evaluation of very complex pricing inputs to optimize both portfolio risk and commodity product value. The unique properties of electricity add tremendous complexity to commodity and option pricing, combined with the high value (Multi-Billion Dollar Book) and low margins make this role particularly central to the firm’s success. Feb. 01 – July 07 North Island Partners – Portfolio Manager. San Diego, California. As portfolio manager, I had responsibility for all investment decisions for a multimillion dollar investment partnership. With a traditional value-driven strategy, my emphasis was on firms with high barriers to entry, and defensible positions in growing markets. The funds strategy was to make investments in companies globally at a price significantly below their value. This role included constant relationship management with ultra high net worth clients, fostering trust and communication leading to broader advisory role with key clients. April ’00–Feb. 2000-2001 Bricoleur Capital Management – Analyst, San Diego, CA. Hired to assist the portfolio managers with the entire investment process of >$1 billion portfolio. Heavy client interface with institutional and high net worth client base. My main role was securities valuation based largely upon and cash-flow metrics for U.S. companies. I analyzed and communicated my interpretation of macro-catalysts affecting the earnings potential for companies for both the long and short portfolios. 1995 – April ‘00 Robert Fleming Securities, Manager, EMEA Equities - London, U.K. Hired to help build an Eastern European investment team. Helped establish from the ground up an investment banking presence in Eastern Europe for the bank. This position involved representation of the interests of the bank and our clients in one of the most difficult legal and financial operating environments in the world. Published research on a variety of public companies in Eastern Europe and Africa. Researched and executed public and private equity transactions. 1991 – 1995 Meredith Jones & Co. Central Asian Representative–Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Established a presence in various cotton producing nations of the ex-Soviet Union, and built a cotton brokerage business from scratch, into one of the largest exporters of Central Asian cotton. Directly responsible for high-level (Prime Ministerial) contract and relationship negotiations. At the time of my departure the business I had built had become the main revenue-center for the Meredith Jones group, a leading cotton merchant. Directly managed a country staff of 12, including 4 expatriates. Held direct responsibility for the success of $20 million equity investment in agricultural Joint Venture. |
